May 19th

Due Monday,

Answer the following questions about "Life on the Mississippi"

1. Where do we see capitalism in the story? Infer this question.
2. Describe the worker - show evidence.
3. What does the speaker talk about in terms of how he views the river?
4. Why is the boat so important?
5. Why doesn't the 'new' worker not want to express his opinion to the captain?

These answers require mostly comprehension but the first question needs you to refer to the notes we have taken.

I today's lecture style class, I talked about what the difference between Illusion and Reality was and gave examples from both modern day of going to American University's vs. what we really want.  We also looked at what is the American Dream and if we would "qualify" or be able to achieve that goal.
For tomorrow, read up until page 369 and be prepared to discuss!

For Monday,

Begin looking at what author you want to research on, remember, he/she must be American or Canadian.  You will have Monday's class to work on your bibliography project.

Read - your hand out "American Dream" Illusion vs. Reality.  Read from page 820 - 865.  There are actually two parts, one is background and the other is a story.

Short answer discussion questions will come on Tuesday and the story should be read by next Friday.

Good morning grade 11's

As you can see I am not here today.  I won't be here next Monday either for obvious reasons.

Today you are to spend at least 15 - 20 minutes reading your Of Mice and Men.  For the remainder of the class, look for proof of both race and gender issues. Have two examples ready for tomorrow's class in either Rose for Emily or Mice and Men.

I will award a +5% BONUS on your last assignment you gave me for anyone who can find an example of race or gender that no one else has found.

March 6th

Good morning,

I will not be in school until Thursday.

Hand in your work to the teacher in the class and kindly tell him or her that it is due today and he will collect it and put it on my desk.

Use this week in class to read.  You are to finish "A Rose for Emily" before Friday.  There will be a quiz on the story.  You are to examine and look at what the author is saying about gender equality and race.  I also want you to start thinking about a modern example of gender Inequality to write about on Friday!

I will probably put a question or two from Of Mice and Men too!  Something about what we have been talking about.

Wednesday, I will hand back the homework and we will discuss it.  We will also finish Martin Luther King's Letter and review the key points.

Friday we will begin a new story.

March 6th is when your narrative is due, however, this date may change depending on how your writing class with Mr. LaPalm goes.  Please ask questions if needed.

Find evidence of either Racism or Gender Inequality in modern times ( In the last 10 years ).  This might come in the form of a news report, newspaper or a speech from any country in the world.  Physically bring it to class and be prepared to talk about it.
