Due November 30th,

For paragraph 2, answer the following questions.

1. What part of the argument is it when he says, "Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope."

2. What rhetorical device is he using when he says, "listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts"? Explain and discuss what appeal it creates.

3. Henry says, "Are we disposed to be of the number of those who having eyes see not, and having ears hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation. " What rhetorical device is he using?  Explain its persuasive effect and what appeal it creates.

4. Give a modern day example of where we see ethos, pathos and logos.  Do not use any of the examples from the hand out or from class.  I want new examples.

Answer the 5 questions at the back of your Literary Vocabulary hand out. Bring your answers to class and be ready to discuss in groups.

November 8th

Due next Monday,

Final copy of your poem must be in by next Monday.  Remember to make it look good for it is going up on the wall for many to enjoy!

Also,

Read the following poems and answer the questions:

1. The Negro Speaks of Rivers pg. 301

What is the speaker talking about when he says he knows rivers?
What events is the speaker talking about?
Describe the poem's literal side and figurative side?

2. To My Dear and Loving Husband pg.32

What is the theme of this poem?
Describe the structure and form
Choose two examples of literal language being used (example - rhyme, alliteration, consonance or sound devices)
What are "Puritans" and what clues does the poem give about them?

3. Much Madness is Divinest Sense

Explain the function of punctuation used in the poem
Who is the speaker and why do you think that?
Read where it says "IN OTHER WORDS" What is being said in this paragraph?  Put this into your own words and explain why you support this or not.

For November 4th

Hopefully the images of your work will come up on this blog.  Take the image and rewrite in good your answer to today's question, "What is the poem about?"
Have your answer written and ready to hand in for Friday.

Also, I will look for your answers to other homework we have had this past week.  This weekend you are to work on your poetry assignment(s).

Read Pg 221 and 222, poems from Dickens

Analyse both poems using the Poetry Check list.  It is important to practice writing your answers out because that is what is required for the exam.
